When Karla joined the RVF she was 6 years old and could barely speak. She didn’t make eye contact and could not acknowledge the presence of strangers. Her grandmother, who cared for Karla, was despairing: “I don’t know what to do with her. Please help me.” Karla lived in her grandparents’ home, which had paints and tools out in the open. (Karla had to be hospitalized once for swallowing paint thinner.) Karla now receives therapy and medical care at La Escuelita, where she is also able to work with a special education teacher. She now has a safe and clean environment in which to play and a place to interact with other children.
